What is the iPhone 7 worth compared to the Galaxy S8? While it is still impossible to compare their actual performance, a simple clash on the basis of features shows Samsung’s advance on its competitor.
The Galaxy S8 hardly officialized, it is time to compare it to its best competitor of the moment: the iPhone 7. Both smartphones are the high-end references of the market. As we will see, the Samsung model takes a logical technical advance on that of Apple. Waiting for the iPhone 8?
1. The design
Difficult not to find that the iPhone 7 takes a real shot of old, even in its very beautiful, but very fragile black version of jet. With its huge curved screen that occupies the entire front, the Galaxy S8 is clearly a device with a very successful design. The iPhone remains slightly lighter (138 grams against 152) and finer (71 mm against 80).
2. The screen
Even if it offers a very nice brightness (665 cd / m²) and a contrast of 1,797: 1, the IPS screen of 4.7 inches of the iPhone 7 is necessarily surpassed by that of the Galaxy S8. With its curved Super Amoled slab, Samsung will inevitably offer better contrast and a brightness at least equivalent. The Galaxy S8’s 5.8-inch screen resolution is also superior (568 pixels per inch compared to 326).
With its Exynos 8895, Samsung takes a step ahead of the engraving fineness, which passes in 10 nanometers, compared to the 14 nanometers of Apple’s A10 chip. Still, it’s still a little early to know if the Samsung SoC will far exceed the power of the A10. Question frequency, both models are very close – 2.34 GHz for Apple, 2.3 GHz for Samsung. On the other hand, Samsung remains at the top on the number of cores: 8 against 4.
This has always been the weak point of the iPhone. With its 1,960 mAh battery, it is clearly distanced by the Galaxy S8 and its 3,000 mAh. But beyond the figures, the Korean brand has shown in the past that it knew very well how to take advantage by offering Android smartphones among the most enduring of the market.
5. The photo
Compared to the Galaxy S7, the improvements in photography do not seem immense. Samsung has chosen the same 12 megapixel photo sensor as its previous model. At the front, the front-end sensor goes from 5 to 8 megapixels and is equipped with an autofocus. Still, the Galaxy S7 is still leading our top 10 photo smartphones, followed closely by the iPhone 7 Plus. If we will have to take the Galaxy S8 in hand before we decide, it is certainly certain that the battle between Apple and Samsung will continue more beautiful, the two brands being clearly the most consistent in this field.
6. Storage and prices
The Samsung Galaxy S8 and the S8 Plus will both be available in 64 GB version at the respective prices of 809 and 909 euros. On the Apple side, the iPhone 7 is not offered in 64 GB version, but in 32, 128 and 256 GB at prices of 769, 879, and 989 euros. It is therefore difficult to compare them frontally, but we note however that the price of the Galaxy S8 has increased by 100 euros compared to the previous generation.
