IPhone 8 release date, price and rumors

The release of the iPhone 8, or iPhone Edition, is becoming clearer. The next Apple smartphone is already talking a lot about it and the rumors about it are multiplying. More than ever, this generation should focus on all the projectors. This is the tenth anniversary of the iPhone. The opportunity for Apple to make changes to his phone more important than usual. The list of new features extends a little more each week. The release date would be at the end of 2017.

The most radical transformation will be the design of the smartphone, which should adopt an OLED display from edge to edge. Jonathan Ive, Apple’s chief designer, is approaching his dream of designing a phone as clean as a piece of glass. The button on the front would be deleted, while the Touch ID fingerprint sensor would be included in the screen, thanks to a new tactile recognition process.

This change will allow the iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition to adopt a format similar to that of the current 4.7-inch iPhone models, while its screen will reach 5.8 inches diagonally. The dimensions would remain unchanged. According to Ming-Chi Kuo analyst KGI Research, supported by the Nikkei newspaper, the facade will divide into a 5.15-inch display area, and a touch-sensitive area underneath that can be customized.

The screen will be AMOLED, a technology already used by Samsung, which will provide this component to Apple. This brings a better contrast than the LCD, and allows to design thinner smartphones, with the edges of the display rounded. Screens of this type are already used in Samsung’s Galaxy S7 Edge and Galaxy S8, which has just been announced. But also in the Apple Watch.

The iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition will adopt a glass back, the way the iPhone 4 and 4S. Since then, Apple had made the choice of aluminum, more resistant and less expensive.

Inside, according to the logic of Apple, the iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition should be animated by a system-on-chip (SoC) A11 designed by the American group. Other advances mentioned include a system of face recognition and augmented reality, thanks to chips allowing to recognize the distance and the shape of the objects in the surroundings, as explained Le Figaro.

All these novelties will be sold at an expensive price. A tariff of more than 1000 dollars is evoked (about 950 euros). Apple will however offer improved and cheaper versions of its current range, presumably iPhone 7s and 7s Plus, with several of the advanced iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition, such as wireless charging, but still with LCD screens of normal size . There would thus be a total of three new models.

There are no photos of these new models yet. Prototypes and spare parts are still not circulating. They usually appear from spring, and tumble over the summer. But concepts circulate in video, imagined by graphic designers. In particular, they show the edge-to-edge display:

Here in detail, the expected features of the iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition:

This future phone is commonly called iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition.

Since the release of the iPhone 4 in 2010, Apple follows a predictable logic, with new units every two years, followed by improved “S” versions. IPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 6 (and 6 Plus), iPhone 6s (and 6s Plus) and iPhone 7 (and 7 Plus). This time, the iPhone 7 will immediately be followed by a distinctly different iPhone 8. 7s and 7s Plus models would be sold in parallel.

There remains, however, a real uncertainty about the name of the new model. Apple could choose to break the logic and name it iPhone Edition, according to Mac. This Japanese blog has already distinguished itself by announcing before the hour the name of the iPhone 5C, or the fact that the iPhone 7 would lose its jack. The “Edition” qualifier is already attached to the most expensive model of Apple Watch, now sold 1500 euros (the first version, in gold, exceeded 10,000 euros). The designation “Edition” could thus clearly position the smartphone in high-end, as a luxury property. This denomination would also allow this model not to obese the chances of the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus, and has some logic.

Among the names mentioned, there is also iPhone X, in reference to the tenth anniversary of the range, or iPhone Pro, which borrows a qualifier used on the iPad or MacBook. On the other hand, the Air brand, long used on its computers, then its shelves, falls into disuse.

iPhone 8 Release date

Here too, Apple is faithful to its habits. Since the iPhone 5 in 2012, all its new smartphones were announced at the beginning of September. It had to wait until early October for the iPhone 4S. The 3G, 3GS and 4 models were presented in June at the WWDC developer conference. The first iPhone (Edge) was unveiled in January 2007.

The timeline Apple has chosen over the past five years has helped build momentum for end-of-year sales by preparing enough inventory during the summer. The release date is set a dozen days after the announcement, time to route the iPhone into the distribution channels. This explains why spare parts from assembly plants usually appear in the months before the release, as Apple and its subcontractors need time to build up their inventory.

Regarding the iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition, it remains to be seen whether Apple will hold the same schedule for a release in September. Indications from the production chain suggest that components, such as the AMOLED screen, would be available in limited quantities. This may suggest stock shortages or a delayed release date, according to Mac Otakara. Recently, Apple has struggled to keep its output goals with its wireless earphones, the Airpods. Delivery is always possible within six weeks.

iPhone 8 Price

The iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition will be expensive. The novelties mentioned above will inflate the bill. “There is a possibility that the price will increase significantly,” said Amit Daryanani, an analyst at RBC Capital. “In particular, the AMOLED display alone could increase the cost of materials by $ 25-30. Given the importance for Apple to maintain its gross margin, we believe that the company could modestly increase its prices to preserve its profitability on its standard model, “wrote Abhey Lamba of Mizuho Securities.

Already, the average price of the iPhone has steadily increased in recent months, thanks to the success of the 7 Plus range, sold from 909 euros in France. The price of at least 1000 dollars (about 950 euros) evoked for the iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition is not so surprising. Smartphones have now replaced laptops for many uses.

As is always the case, the current iPhone should drop in price. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will take the place of the 6s and 6s Plus, sold 659 and 769 euros. They will be replaced by the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus. The entry-level should always be occupied by the iPhone SE, which could be updated in the coming weeks by Apple. It is now sold for 489 euros.

iPhone 8 Design

It has been three years since Apple declined the same design for its generations of smartphone 6, 6s and 7. The newcomer would bring more apparent changes, thanks to the inclusion of an onboard display. The home button located on the front of the first iPhone of 2007 would disappear, to be replaced by a tactile zone.

The iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition would adopt a new material. The device would be designed around a glass back, as on the iPhone 4 and 4S, and no longer in aluminum. Glass would be essential to include a wireless charging technology, to reduce interference. It would be circled with metal, to connect it to the screen.

Ceramic prototypes, a lightweight and durable material used for the Apple Watch Edition, were also tested, according to the Mac Otakara blog, which still claimed at the beginning of March that the choice of design had not been stopped.

According to this same source, the two sensors of the camera, on the back, would be positioned one under the other, and not next to one as on the iPhone 7 Plus. The smartphone would still be water resistant (at least IP67), like its predecessor, and would still be deprived of jack.

iPhone 8 Touchscreen

According to several sources, the iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition will integrate a screen of 5.8 inches of diagonal, against 4.7 and 5.5 inches for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. It will break down between a 5.15-inch display area and an area dedicated to virtual buttons at the bottom of the screen. The slab, provided by Samsung, will occupy almost the entire front of the device, which will allow the iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition to be as compact as the iPhone 7.

The screen will be AMOLED, a technology known for enhanced contrast, deep blacks, expanded viewing angles and brighter colors. It does not require a backlight layer, which makes it possible to design finer devices, and can be curved. It also consumes less energy. The Apple Watch already works with a screen of this type.

Apple would have placed an order of 100 million AMOLED screens to Samsung, which already uses this type of screen in its smartphones of the Galaxy range. Its competitors, AU Optronics, Sharp and Japan Display, would not be ready to provide it until next year.

The shape of the screen is still uncertain. Analysts expect the screen to be curved at the edges, in the manner of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and S8. Others predict that the iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition will be flat, in the manner of current models. The iPhone 7s and 7s Plus will retain the same type of LCD screen as their predecessors, and similar diagonals.

For the first time since the first iPhone in 2007, there will be no home button below the screen. The iPhone 7 was already physical, but digital. The control area would be virtual. Apple filed a patent application for an integrated Touch ID fingerprint recognition process on the screen, and a light sensor also placed under the screen.

iPhone 8 Processor and Memory

Following the logic of Apple, the iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition will contain an A11 system-on-chip. It should be engraved at 10 nanometers, compared to 16 nanometers for the A10 Fusion that equips the iPhone 7. This makes it possible to design systems occupying less space, putting more transistors on the same surface and consuming less energy . Apple’s first SoC, the A4 of the iPhone 4, was etched at 45 nanometers.

The manufacture of this processor would be entrusted to the Taiwanese TSMC. Its co-chairman, Mark Liu, told a microprocessor forum that the production of 10-nm chips by his company would increase dramatically in the second half of 2017. The factories will start shooting next month, according to a daily Chinese, cited by Digitimes. Apple has already handed out all the production of the SoC A10 Fusion to the Taiwanese, while it previously allocated one half of the orders to Samsung.

Regarding memory, Apple would stay on a 3 GB endowment, the same as that of the iPhone 7 Plus and that the future 7s Plus. The storage capacity would be 64 GB and 256 GB. The iPhone 7s and 7s Plus will also have storage up to 256 GB, as today.

On the other hand, this new iPhone would not have USB-C connector unlike information that a time has circulated. Only the connector on the charger supplied with the smartphone would go to this format.

iPhone 8 Battery and autonomy

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, Apple will review the interior layout of its iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition, to give more space to the battery. A sketch shows an L-shaped component, instead of a uniform I-shaped block. This will position a battery with a capacity of 2700 mAh, against 1960 mAh for the iPhone 7 and 2900 mAh for the ” IPhone 7 Plus.

In a note Katy Huberty of Morgan Stanley believes that the iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition will offer a “longer lasting” autonomy. Today’s smartphones are now more than a day in classic use, and up to two days for some. On the Apple side, the iPhone has gone from 6 hours of autonomy in Internet browsing to 15 hours on the latest models.

However, it remains to be seen whether the capacity gains on the batteries will actually be used to increase the autonomy, or to guarantee an equivalent duration than on the current models. Several components, especially around the photo part, could consume more.

iPhone 8 Wireless charging

The iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition will include a new wireless charging process, which would also be offered on the future iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus.

It is established that Apple has been working on the subject for many years. About fifteen patents have been filed and five teams are working on this, using different technologies, according to Reuters. The manufacturer has also joined the Wireless Power Consortium, which chairs the destiny of the Qi wireless charging standard.

Several smartphones already offer wireless charging, by default or optional. It is even possible to equip existing iPhone with compatible shells with wireless charging. The Apple Watch itself uses this process, as well as the recent Airpods. It is loaded by landing on a small round base.

With the iPhone, Apple would look for a more innovative solution, allowing a recharge several meters away. Start-up Energous declared in February 2015 to work with “one of the largest electronics companies in the world”, without saying more. However, its technology would not be ready in time for the iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition.

Augmented reality

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, has not hidden his interest in augmented reality, which allows visualizing objects or virtual characters as if they were really in front of him. This process has already been implemented, quite rudimentary, in the game Pokémon GO, which enjoyed a thunderous success last summer.

With the iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition, Apple could go much further. His bet on the matter would be “ambitious,” according to Bloomberg. It has bought several start-ups specializing in augmented reality, including PrimeSense, which is behind Kinect technology. According to several sources in the production chain, it will include proximity sensors capable of detecting the distance and the precise shape of the surrounding objects, which could be used, for example, to model a part and what it contains. This is a reminder of what Google is experiencing with the Tango project, which can be tested on an Asus and Lenovo smartphone.

In a note released in February, the bank Barclays suggests that Apple will use components of the Franco-Italian STMicroelectronics for the next iPhone. His Austrian competitor Ams Heptagon was also selected. Developers could be called upon to contribute to this project by adapting their applications to this new process.

Proximity sensors could also be used to more accurately recognize gestures in front of the smartphone. He could find an outlet in facial recognition, in addition to the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, to unlock his smartphone by simply holding it in hand, or on the contrary to lock it as soon as it moves away.

Some of these features would also be offered on the future iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus.

Apple’s buyouts in augmented reality include: Polar Rose (2010), PrimeSense (2013), Faceshift (2015), LinX (2015), Metaio (2015), Emotient ).

Sales objectives

Analysts rival forecast sales on the iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition. The smartphone accounts for about two-thirds of Apple’s sales. The success or failure of a model has an immediate impact on the health of the group.

Overall, experts expect the new model to do as well, if not better than the iPhone 6, released in September 2014, which had allowed Apple to break all records. In a note released in early March, analysts at Skyworks Solutions were expecting 225 million iPhone sales in the year 2017, with around 120 million smartphones of latest generation, including iPhone 7s. For US broker Instinet, Apple could distribute “easily” from 45 million to 60 million iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition in the last three months of the year.

There are, however, questions about the selling price, which could limit the success of this model. “We continue to believe that this high price could limit demand,” writes Sherri Scribner of Deutsche Bank in a note published at the end of February. An output shifted compared to the iPhone 7s could also penalize this model on the end of the year.
